Richmond CA’s Rayana Jay’s new EP Sorry About Last Night is a goodbye album. Not a sad goodbye, but an “I’m going to let you know one more time” goodbye album.
Rayana’s year started with fire features on Azure’s acclaimed Leap Year and P-Lo’s Before Anything and ends with her dropping this gem. Sorry About Last Night’s lead single, the Mikos Da Gawd produced Sleepy Brown is an ode to the smooth man from Organized Noize. The song got love on Fader, Complex and from Sleepy himself.
The highlight track is another Mikos Da Gawd production. Nothing to Talk About captures the neo-soul vibe of the entire project. Rayana glides over the track. Silky smooth but never light, she shares her love experience and lets it hang in the air.
Besides the two singles, another standout track is Bad Decisions featuring Elujay (2016 has seen the continued emergence of young talent from the east). Produced by Drew Banga, this track provides some bounce to the project while staying in that smooth lane that Rayana been riding in like one of Sleepy’s Cadillac’s.
Rayana and her production team put a fresh vibe on a familiar sound. Rayana’s voice rides over the production effortlessly. Not one track is out of place on the project. The rare piece of art that you can play all the way through.
Based on the heat that is Sorry About Last Night, this is probably the last time she is going to be apologizing for a while.
