FAZE's Review of Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight

September 12, 2016

Travis Scott hit his fans with a surprise mixtape available exclusively on Apple Music. Well, it was a surprise to me at least! Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight is a very interesting title for the project but it actually comes from one of Quavo's (from the rap group, Migos) lines on the mixtape's track, 'pick up the phone'. Despite the title, the album slaps! If you're looking for a lyrical showcase from Travis Scott, I would advise you to go elsewhere. As a fan of his, I've come to the realization that his tracks are simply audibly pleasing and nothing else. His music hits the eardrums with an array of voice tones, pitches, and synthetic sounds. If I were to envision how Hip-Hop music would be in the future, based purely on sound, I would have to think Travis Scott.

As far as the lyrical content, it is provided by the mixtape's features. One of my favorite rappers of all time, Andre 3000, laces listeners with his picturesque flow on 'the ends' while prolific rhyme-spitter, Kendrick Lamar does his thing on 'goosebumps'. However, one of my favorite tracks on the album, 'through the late night', features Kid Cudi. And I'm not talking about the most recent Cudi sound...I'm talking vintage, Man On The Moon Kid Cudi. Honestly, this track is truly a blessing to my ears and I love how Travis Scott managed to orchestrate it. Other honorable mentions include, the slaptastic 'outside' featuring 21 Savage and the melodic track, 'sweet sweet'.

With all being said, Travis Scott gives us a gallant effort with his latest project. The mixtape's many features goes well with the overall sound of the project and does not feel out of place whatsoever. Even though this is more of a mixtape, I would have to give this project a slight nod over Scott's first studio album, Days Before Rodeo. As mentioned previously, don't expect to hear Travis Scott spitting any kind of thought-provoking lyrics. He's not that type of artist. But he is the type of artist that produces a good, futuristic type of sound. Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight is now on available for purchase on Apple Music. Give it a listen ASAP!!
